2018 saw some incredible discoveries throughout the biotechnology industry, the emergence of DNA and gene-editing technologies, industrious research into curing cancer and innovative cancer treatments being broughto to life. The first ever cannabis-based drug was approved by the FDA, and we finally made headway into tackling the antibiotic resistance crisis.
2019 has progressed to be just as impressive. Here are some examples of innovation out there. A mix of familiar, dependable names as well as some smaller, more niche biotechs brandishing new disruptive technologies and approaches to addressing unmet medical need around the world.
1 – Enterome Bioscience
Enterome Bioscience began life in 2008 and is focussed on both the human gut microbiome and finding disease management solutions. The company is developing a myriad of drugs to target the gut bacteria in Crohn’s, IBD and cancer vaccines that target tumour antigens.
2 – Virion Biotherapeutics
Virion is an English company and is a newcomer, only founded in 2017.
Virion’s main aim is to provide therapeutics against human respiratory virus infections. This is being done through their original Therapeutic Interfering Particles (TIP). TIPs are used to prevent infection and help to alleviate disease. Virion’s TIP VH244 is in a pre-clinical development phase.
3 – Alnylam Pharmaceuticals
Alnylam was founded in 2002 and is based in Massachusetts. They already have one genetic medication (Onpattro) approved for clinical use with seven furthermore in late-stage clinical development. They are focused on using RNA interference (RNAi) to innovate medicines that can help patients with genetic diseases, cardio-metabolic diseases, hepatic infectious diseases, and central nervous system and ocular diseases.
4 – AMSilk
German biotech company AMSilk began life in 2008 with the remit of producing synthetic biological products. These products are used in textiles, medical aids and cosmetics. Using spider silk to produce biodegradable shoes is one of their accolades. They have also linked with Airbus to innovate aerospace design.
5 – Avantium Technologies
Avantium is a Dutch company based in Amsterdam. It has been in operation since 2000 and works on creating sustainable products that include bioplastics, biofuels and chemicals.
Avantium is working with Coca-Cola and Danone to find ways of producing new and innovate packaging.
